Malcolm Turnbull is trying to soften¹ the blow of penalty rate cuts by urging the Fair Work Commission to phase them in. In a more robust² move Bill Shorten moved to suspend standing³ orders in parliament to try to introduce a bill to address the Fair Work Commission's decision. The Commission concedes the decision to reduce Sunday penalty rates will cause hardship for some workers.

Police have arrested a 52 year old man in relation to a fire that killed three people in Melbourne's west. The bodies of three people believed to have been squatting⁴ in the former factory were discovered by firefighters. The man is being questioned by detectives from the Arson⁵ and Explosives Squad⁶.
