Spain is to start suspending Catalonia's autonomy this weekend, after its leader threatened to declare independence. The prime minister's office says the cabinet will meet to activate¹ article 155 of the constitution, allowing it to take over running the region. Earlier, the Catalan leader said the region's parliament would vote on independence if Spain 'continues repression²'.

A man has been jailed for eight years for killing⁴ another man with a single punch in Melbourne's CBD. 26-year-old Richard Andrew Vincec pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of 22-year-old Jaiden Walker who was struck outside a bar in May. The Victorian supreme⁵ court heard Vincec was drunk and high on drugs when he delivered the fatal blow.
