Health officials and police in WA are racing¹ to find out exactly how a security guard contracted the highly infectious UK strain of coronavirus from hotel quarantine in Perth. Two separate inquiries² are now under way. Tests for 13 contacts of the guard have come back negative and a further 66 contacts have been identified. Residents and businesses in Perth, the south west and Peel regions are all preparing for their second full day of lockdown. There were, thankfully, zero new cases of COVID in the Perth region yesterday.

Firefighters are battling a fast-moving bushfire that has destroyed a??t least three homes and is threatening lives in Perth's hills. Hot, windy conditions are fanning the flames and spreading the fire in a north-westerly direction. At least two firefighters have been injured, a fire truck has been destroyed. And an evacuation centre has been s?et up in Swan View, but residents in some areas have been told it is too late to leave. An emergency warning is in place for large area that stretches from Wooroloo to the Tonkin Highway.

And the United States has struck a major deal with a Brisbane firm to produce COVID testing kits³ to be used in the homes of millions of Americans. $303 million will be given to biotech company Ellume, to produce more than a half million tests a day by the end of the year. Much of the money will go to build the manufacturing base in the United States. The test is not approved for use here in Australia.
