 It seemed colder on the long ride back to Winterfell, though the wind had died by then and the sun was higher in the sky. 冷风已息，暖阳高照，但返回临冬城的漫漫长路却似乎更加寒冷。

Bran rode with his brothers, well ahead of the main party, his pony¹ struggling hard to keep up with their horses. 布兰与兄长并骑，远远地走在队伍前头，他跨下小马气喘吁吁地跟上其他坐骑的迅捷脚步。

The deserter died bravely, Robb said. “这逃兵死得挺勇敢。”罗柏说。

He was big and broad and growing every day, with his mother's coloring,  高大壮硕的他每天都在长大，同时遗传了母亲的白皙肤色、

the fair skin, red-brown hair, and blue eyes of the Tullys of Riverrun. "He had courage, at the least." 红褐头发，以及徒利家族的蓝色眼眸。“不管怎麽说，好歹他有点勇气。”

"No," Jon Snow said quietly. "It was not courage. This one was dead of fear. You could see it in his eyes, Stark²." “不对，”琼恩静静地说，“那不算是勇气。史塔克，这家伙正是因为害怕而死的，你可以从他的眼神里看出来。”

Jon's eyes were a grey so dark they seemed almost black, but there was little they did not see. 琼恩的灰色眼瞳颜色深得近乎墨黑，但世间少有事物能逃过他的观察。

He was of an age with Robb, but they did not look alike. 他与罗柏同年，但两人容貌大相迳庭。

Jon was slender where Robb was muscular, dark where Robb was fair, graceful³ and quick where his half brother was strong and fast. 罗柏肌肉发达，皮肤白皙，强壮而动作迅速；琼恩则是体格精瘦，肤色沉黑，举止优雅而敏捷。

Robb was not impressed. "The Others take his eyes," he swore. "He died well. Race you to the bridge?" 罗柏不以为然。“叫异鬼把他眼睛给挖了吧，”他咒道：“他总算是死得壮烈。怎麽样，比赛谁先到桥边？”

"Done," Jon said, kicking his horse forward. Robb cursed and followed, and they galloped⁴ off down the trail, “一言为定。”琼恩语毕两脚往马肚一夹，纵马前奔。罗柏咒骂几句後也追了上去，两人沿著路径向前急驰。

Robb laughing and hooting⁵, Jon silent and intent. The hooves of their horses kicked up showers of snow as they went. 罗柏又叫又笑，琼恩则稳静专注。马蹄在两人身後溅起一片白色雪花。

Bran did not try to follow. His pony could not keep up.  布兰没有跟上去，他的小马没这般能耐。

He had seen the ragged⁶ man's eyes, and he was thinking of them now.  他方才见到了死囚的眼睛，现在陷入沉思。

After a while, the sound of Robb's laughter receded⁷, and the woods grew silent again. 没过多久，罗柏的笑声渐远，林间归於寂静。

 

1 pony   

adj.小型的；n.小马

5 hooting

6 ragged   

adj.衣衫褴褛的，粗糙的，刺耳的

7 receded   

v.逐渐远离( recede的过去式和过去分词 )；向后倾斜；自原处后退或避开别人的注视；尤指问题
