On the last day of 2015, we bring to you news about smoking in China.
But first, listen to this quote: “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.”
It was the American writer, Mark Twain, who said this.
And it captures just what the Chinese government might be up against in its efforts to curb1 smoking in the country.
Indeed, despite its attempts to reduce cigarette consumption, the number of smokers3 in China increased in the past five years, according to a report by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The country had 316 million smokers above the age of 15 this year, 15 million more than in 2011, the report said.
That’s almost the population of the United States.
The government raised the wholesale4 tax rate for cigarettes from 5 percent to 11 percent in May, but that did little to deter5.
In 2015, smokers were found to have paid two times more than in 2009 for cigarettes: 10 yuan for a pack of 20 cigarettes in the cities, and 7.8 yuan in the countryside.
Each smoker2 is thought to have smoked 15.2 cigarettes a day, more than half a pack, rising from 14.2 in 2011.
Conducted in 2014 and 2015, the study is based on a sample of 15,000 people around the country, both smokers and non-smokers, above the age of 15.
The study has also found, not surprisingly, a rising level of smokers coinciding with a low level of understanding about the consequences of smoking.
While most of the participants knew that smoking can lead to lung cancer, only one-third understood the habit can also cause strokes.
Only one-fifth knew smoking can also cause erectile dysfunction.
Moreover, 28 percent of the participants believed that cigarettes with lower levels of tar6 are less harmful, leading them to ignore other unhealthy aspects of the habit and consume even more.
On the bright side, however, respondents said they saw fewer people smoke in work places, public transportation stops, and home than in the past.
That means, at least, fewer people are being exposed to secondhand smoke, researchers say.
So far the only city in the country imposing7 a smoking ban in public indoor areas is the capital city of Beijing.
The World Health Organization recently urged the country to take the ban nationwide.
Well there goes 2015.
