In order to understand the consequences for a nation of the two roles being combined, we need look no further than our cousins. In the USA, the presidency¹ incorporates both the actuality and the mystique of power - and by extension the living, breathing person of the president embodies² these attributes. I always remember an American friend of mine - a savvy³, liberally-inclined publisher - describing a close encounter he had at the White House during the Clinton administration.
