In fact, the first half of the 17th century turned out to be something of golden age for music, particularly when Sigismund II decided¹ to import Italian musicians into his royal household. Over a 30-year-period, some 23 of them arrived in all, one being composer Giovanni Anerio from Rome who was employed as the court choir² master.
