The top stories today. Adrian Bayley has won an appeal against a rape¹ conviction. With his 43-year minimum jail term reduced to 40 years. The 44-year-old was serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of Jill Meagher when he was convicted of three other rapes². A Victorian court has upheld his appeal against one of those convictions.

China has dismissed a ruling that its claim over the South China Sea is illegal, saying the decision is one sided and far fetched. The international court found China has no historic title over the region, and has breached³ the Philippines' sovereign rights.

A cold snap is hitting the south-east of the nation, bringing with it freezing temperatures, wild conditions and snowfalls. Wind warnings have been issued for Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, the A.C.T, and South Australia. In South Australia, 50,000 homes have been without power, while in Tasmania about 10,000 homes and businesses also lost electricity.

And Parramatta Eels⁴ player Corey Norman has pleaded

guilty to drug possession. The 25 year old was caught with a container of MDMA capsules and a prescribed, restricted substance at Sydney's Star Casino in May.
