It's been revealed two Australians were among the injured when a man armed with a knife went on a stabbing spree in central London. An American woman was killed and five others wounded in Russell Square yesterday. An Australian man who was stabbed in the chest, and an Australian woman who was stabbed in the back, have been discharged from hospital. Police are investigating the mental health of the 19- year-old suspect- a Norwegian man of Somali descent.

Russia says the International Olympic Committee has cleared 270 of its athletes to compete at the Rio games. Russia's full olympic team would have consisted of 387 competitors before dozens were banned for systematic¹ doping. A three-member IOC panel has agreed to allow 18 shooters and 11 boxers² to compete in Rio next week, as well as some sailors, tennis players and equestrian³ riders.

Militants⁴ in Afghanistan have attacked a convoy⁵ of foreign tourists, injuring six and their local driver. The tourists, including British and US citizens, were being escorted by the Afghan army to Herat city when they were ambushed⁶. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Australian researchers have found a hidden figure underneath⁷ a 19th century portrait by impressionist Edgar Degas. The art experts used x-ray fluorescence to find a hidden woman concealed⁸ under Degas' "Portrait of a Woman". It was long suspected that the portrait hid a second painting, but traditional x-rays weren't able to uncover it. It's believed the hidden painting depicts⁹ French model Emma Dobigny.
