Kangaroo island is again under serious threat this morning, with residents of the island's largest town, Kingscote fleeing to a jetty and relief centre overnight. The heat from South Australia is moving east, with damaging winds and extreme fire danger predicted for Victoria and New South Wales today. And in Western Australia firefighters are battling blazes south of Perth.

US media is reporting Iran may have mistakenly shot down a Ukrainian plane that crashed on Wednesday, killing² all 176 people onboard. Senior US and Iraqi officials are quoted as saying a surface to air missile system may have hit the airliner³. A team of Ukrainian investigators⁴ is l?ooking into that possibility, but iran says initial investigations⁵ suggest a mechanical problem caused the plane to explode into flames, mid-air.
