Political leaders have joined film-makers and fans around the world in remembering the American actor Paul Newman who's died of cancer aged1 83. The French President Nicolas Sarkozy described him as a Hollywood legend. The former American President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary praised his generosity2 in raising hundreds of millions of dollars for charity. Paul Newman made more than 50 films including Cool Hand Luke and The Sting. From Los Angeles, Rajesh Mirchandani reports.
With his good looks and piercing blue eyes, Paul Newman could have been a Hollywood romantic lead. Yet he made his name playing rebels and misfits. Films like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Hustler earned him millions of fans and 10 Oscar nominations3. He won 3 including 1 for his extensive charitable work. The Newman's Own food company he founded sold products like salad dressing4 in supermarkets across America. But all the profits went to good causes, in particular to holiday camps for sick children that he set up.
