World soccer is in turmoil1 this morning over claims of widespread corruption2. Fourteen people, including nine current and former FIFA officials, have been arrested and charged. Seven of them were taken into custody3 after a raid at a luxury hotel in the Swiss city of Zurich. They are accused of racketeering, fraud and money laundering4 involving tens of millions of dollars of over more than two decades. ‘They were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest and to protect the integrity of the game. Instead, they corrupted5 the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and to enrich themselves.’
Australia’s most notorious paedophile priest says Church leaders knew about his offending as early as the 1960s. Gerald Ridsdale will continue his evidence to the Child Abuse Royal Commission via video link from prison today. Ridsdale has admitted abusing hundreds of children over several decades in and around the Victorian city of Ballarat.
