Defence officials have confirmed Australian jets were involved in a bungled¹ operation over Syria. The US-led air strikes were meant to target Islamic State militants², but instead killed as many as 83 Syrian soldiers. The strikes came less than a week into a ceasefire aimed at stopping the bloodshed in Syria's five-year civil war.

At least 29 people have been injured in an explosion in a crowded district of New York City. The cause of the blast in a dumpster in the downtown neighbourhood of Chelsea remains³ unclear. Mayor Bill De Blasio described it as "intentional⁴" but said there were no known terror links.
