Dad: [高兴] I like Nancy, she reminds me of your mom when we first met.

Brad: They don’t look anything alike¹.

Dad: I’m not talking about looks; I’m talking about that ...spark(朝气), you know, that spirit(精神). How are things at school?

Brad: Uh...you know, we got more books than bookcases, roof leaks(屋顶漏水), cutbacks(预算缩减). Little worried they might not ask me back next year. There’s plenty of teachers with a lot more experience than me.

Dad: [高兴] I’m proud of you, regardless(不管怎么样).

Brad: Doesn’t feel that way. Why do I feel you’re still embarrassed(尴尬的) by me? And it’s okay, dad, you can admit(承认) it.

Dad: [不悦] You’re not trying to start something?

Brad: No, no, no...but you know, we’re finally talking, and it’s good, so let’s talk. I’ve always been an embarrassment² to you. I have, haven’t I? Even when you used to come visit me, you used to squirm[skwə:m] (局促不安) when all those eyeballs would click³ my way. You’ve never been able to accept it.

Dad: You’re right. It is tough being with you sometimes...[沉重] I hate it when we go to restaurants and people give you those looks. Sometimes, I wanted just... I just feel so helpless(无助的). You know, I’ve always been a guy who could fix things...but the one thing I could never fix was the one thing that was hurting you most.

Brad: It doesn’t need fixing. Nobody can fix it.

Dad: I know. I know. [艰难开口] But... maybe it’s my fault. Maybe I gave it to you.
